The Church family, however, soon colonized into the dingy middle-class. Robert Terrell worked for many historic period in education and law and became the first black judge for the territory of Columbia, a post he held for over twenty years (1902-25), through Republican and democratic presidents. Terrell and Church had one child, Phillis, named later on the eighteenth-century poet Phillis Wheatley.

In addition to Phillis, the geminate adopted the daughter, Mary, of Church Terrells comrade Thomas.
